Dublin International Piano Competition announces quarter-finalists

28 pianists from 12 countries to compete in prestigious Dublin competition this May

The Dublin International Piano Competition (DIPC) has today (03.03.25) announced the quarter-finalists for the 13th edition of the prestigious competition. Taking place in Dublin over eight days from 9th to 16th May 2025, the competition will culminate in a grand final at the National Concert Hall.

After evaluating video recital submissions from 59 candidates, the international jury selected 28 pianists, aged between 18 and 29, from a total of 12 countries to advance to the quarter-final stage. Among them is Callum McLachlan, who holds Irish citizenship and is the sole competitor representing Ireland in the quarter-finals.

The jury, composed of six internationally acclaimed pianists – Anne-Marie McDermott, Katie McGuinness, Noriko Ogawa, Michel Béroff, Piers Lane, and Finghin Collins – assessed the submissions remotely.

Speaking at today’s announcement, Artistic Director of the DIPC and chair of the jury, Finghin Collins, said: “The quarter-finalists have demonstrated exceptional artistry, technique, and individuality in their video submissions. We look forward to welcoming them to Dublin this May, where they will bring our competition to life with their talent and passion.”

As part of the quarter-final requirements, competitors will perform a 40-minute solo recital, including one of four five-minute contemporary pieces specially commissioned by RTÉ lyric fm for the DIPC. These pieces, whose scores have now been sent to the successful candidates, were composed by leading Irish composers David Coonan, Roger Doyle, Ailís Ní Ríain and Judith Ring.

Collins added: “The addition of the commissioned contemporary works promises to add a dynamic and modern edge to the quarter-final performances, and I look forward to the creativity the competitors will bring to these pieces.”

The quarter-final stage represents a significant milestone in the competition, as the musicians vie for a place in the semi-final round and, ultimately, the final.

The quarter-finals will take place from 9th to 11th May, followed by the semi-finals on 13th and 14th May, both at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. The final, on 16th May at the National Concert Hall, will see three finalists perform concertos with the National Symphony Orchestra under conductor Jonas Alber.
